DHEA is produced in the adrenal gland from cholesterol. Like testosterone in men, estrogen in women and other critical hormones, DHEA levels peak in the second or third decade of life, after which levels begin to decline. In men, about half of DHEA is lost by the age of 40.

These functions include increasing bone density, helping insulin to function properly, supporting mental health, but most importantly, DHEA is a precursor for testosterone.
